This was an interesting romance because it actually had me unsure for some time about who the hero would turn out to be. I was reminded of an analysis I once read of classic mystery writers, which showed who would turn out to be the murderer if a story had been written by Christie or Marsh or Sayers, etc. If this story had been written by Emma Darcy, I think it would have gone in the other direction. But since it's by Lamb, the rapey, insanely jealous, physically and emotionally abusive husband wins. To his credit, he does recognize his bad behavior and realize that he needs to change.
