A masochistic delight -- more like Penny Jordan than Charlotte Lamb, though Lamb's writing is better. Caroline is less tough than most Lamb heroines, which makes sense considering what she's been through. You have to turn your brain off a bit to enjoy this one, because though Nick thinks he would be insane to get involved with Caroline, it's obviously the other way round. After having escaped from one psychotically jealous, abusive husband, why on earth would she ever take on another one? Lamb tries to laugh this issue off at the end, but it doesn't work, and the ending isn't as strong as the rest of the book. Still, a very entertaining bit of quick vicarious suffering.
